As we approach the end of Isaiah, it is as if an intercessor looks back on all that has been prophesied previously and offers up a loud cry to God, “Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down!” This is a prayer for revival. In light of the people’s sin and the discipline from the Lord, the grace extended and the call to repentance, and the promise of the Messiah who will bring a new and blessed future, the intercessor fervently prays for God to work for his people. The need of our day is for a visitation from the Lord and a new generation of believers who will give themselves to prayer.

Isaiah 61 prophesies the coming of an Anointed One who will preach good news. As history unfolds, we see this One is Jesus Christ. We also see that Jesus accomplished what he proclaimed. He ushered in the age of grace with its open door to all who repent and believe. New, spiritual life is the gift he offers in word and grants by grace. He opens eyes to see and sets souls free. First, let us receive this Preacher and respond to his word. Then, let us together be on mission with him in the proclamation of the good news.

Isaiah 60 gives us a vision of the future for God’s people. It is a future of glory as he shines upon us and dwells with us. Isaiah tells us to hold that vision firm in our minds because it provides the strength we need to press on toward the future. The vision gives the guidance we need to order our lives according to the future. It is the message we proclaim that calls people to Christ, who makes this future a reality. May we arise and shine with the glory of the Lord upon us.

Isaiah 59 begins with sin, continues with sorrow, and ends in salvation. The message is that God graciously intervenes to save sinners and renew his people. This is a timeless message and broad in its relevance. Still today, the individual person needs to be saved, churches need to be renewed, and societies can experience spiritual awakening when God intervenes by his Word and Spirit. For this we pray.

In this passage of Isaiah, the Lord sends a message for his people who are back in their homeland and free to worship him. He calls them to keep their worship pure by keeping their hearts humble and close to him. This is a message for us today as we worship while we wait for Christ to come again.
