He alone can open our minds to understand the gospel, deliver us from spiritual darkness, and rightly order our priorities for his Lordship. Those who are helped by him become his church in every city. And every city is helped by a congregation that lives for Christ.

Paul loved this new church. Later, he wrote the letter of Philippians to them. It, too, is filled with Christ. Today we take up this letter to fill our souls with Christ for his glory and our joy.

It is hard to imagine how Paul could say more about how utterly powerless human achievements are for justification before God, and how effectual the cross of Jesus Christ is to make us right with God. He says it all here. Human merit counts for nothing before God. The cross of Christ is the only sufficient merit for our salvation. Here at the end of Galatians, if we are still clinging to our goodness, this passage will strip us bare. And if we are aware that we need a Savior, this passage offers us Christ who died for our sins to give us everything.
