In what amounts to the final recorded words of Jesus’ public ministry, he is calling people to believe in him. It is important for us to hear what Jesus said, and also to understand why his words are placed at this point in the Gospel. The message of Jesus is that he stands before us as the One with all the authority of God, who gives eternal life, and who is to be believed. We hear this call to believe at the end of Jesus’ public ministry as a summary of everything he said and did while on earth. Nothing is more important than how we respond to Jesus.

Jesus entered Jerusalem for the final week of his life riding on a donkey. This fulfilled the prophecy of a humble king who will come with salvation and peace for the nations. At this stage in the plan of God, Jesus knew that he must secure this salvation for sinners. He knew that true peace is with God. Jesus entered this week with his eyes on the cross. How will we receive him?

This passage shows us what belief and unbelief in Jesus look like. Caiaphas and Judas have a distorted vision of Jesus, a heart bound by pride, and they take actions that reveal their unbelief. Mary sees, loves, and serves Jesus as the Son of God. Mary is a believer. May the Lord give us genuine faith today.
