On The Road With The Risen One – Luke 24:1-35 – Easter – April 21, 2019

When we gather together as a congregation, we are like the disciples sitting around the table with Jesus partaking of the bread and cup. We are sitting among sacred things. Here, among the sacred, we must not be profane by speaking evil against one another. May God give us eyes to see the realities of his grace among us, and the humility to love each other well. 148265

This week Justin sits down with Josh Hussung to discuss the sermon on Sunday about working through conflict in the church with humility.

We all have idolatrous desires within us that can steal our joy and cause conflict. These desires and the conflict they cause prevent the church from having the gospel witness that it is called to. In order for us to live in peace with one another, we must adopt an attitude of humility. This posture of humility includes self-suspicion, self-correction, and self-watchfulness.

This week Justin and Scott discuss James 4:1-10, and how we are to live as Christians as we battle selfish ambition and the temptation to drift from God as the Prodigal Son did in Luke 15.

Jesus is serious about joy, in heaven and on earth. He says there is great joy when sinful people return to God down the road of repentance. James restates Jesus’ call to joy. He starts by exposing our joylessness in relation to people and to God, and then he shows its cause. He calls us to die to the selfishness that robs our joy and submit to God who is our joy. This harsh passage is full of love because the hard road it sets before us leads to God.

Our words reflect the prevailing wisdom of our hearts. There is a wisdom from above that changes our hearts and gives us the power to use our words of good. This wisdom belongs to God and comes to us in Christ. A heart at peace with God through faith in Christ expresses itself in words of peace to others.

This week Justin and Scott discuss ways we can better rely on the Holy Spirit to control our tongues.

In this passage, James points out the power of our words, our powerlessness to control them, and the power of God that guides and shapes them. Once again, we see that the heart of the matter is humility in the heart.
