Jesus is serious about joy, in heaven and on earth. He says there is great joy when sinful people return to God down the road of repentance. James restates Jesus’ call to joy. He starts by exposing our joylessness in relation to people and to God, and then he shows its cause. He calls us to die to the selfishness that robs our joy and submit to God who is our joy. This harsh passage is full of love because the hard road it sets before us leads to God.

In this passage James is showing how love removes partiality based on distinctions that do not matter in the kingdom of God.
