Psalm 119 contains prayers to God for his work of grace in the life of his child. The psalmist is asking God to do something within him so that he may see, love, and keep God’s word. Jesus said that all Scripture speaks of him. So, Psalm 119 becomes the disciple’s prayer. Our first prayer is that God would open our eyes to see Jesus Christ in the Bible.

Every hard word of rebuke that the LORD speaks to his people comes with a loving call to return to him. The evidence that the people have gone away from the LORD is laid out before them. They are cynical, claiming that there is no benefit in serving the LORD and keeping his commands. They are selfish, withholding their tithes and offerings. The LORD rebukes them for their short-sighted and selfish understanding of his covenant with them. He calls them to return in their hearts to love him by honoring him with their money. He promises to receive them and to care for them.

Malachi speaks to several human relationships that need to be renewed. He focused on the marriage relationship because divorce had become a widespread practice. Malachi calls us to understand marriage and other relationships in the context of God’s covenant relationship with us. Faithfulness to God will lead to faithfulness to others.
