We are called to consider salvation. In the trials and testings of life, we may be tempted to neglect our salvation for some form of self-generated coping scheme or doubt our salvation because our circumstances are so difficult, or come to believe that our salvation has no bearing on real life. The truth is that our salvation is so great even angels want to understand it. It is the basis of our hope in hardship, and it shapes the way we live. Today, we consider salvation and encourage ourselves in the grace that will be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Grace Community Church exists to build spiritually healthy people for ministry in the world. One of the ways that we pursue this mission is by gathering each Sunday for corporate worship, prayer, and biblical teaching. In the various trials of life that test our faith, from where does our joy come? Our joy comes from God; his great mercy toward us in Christ, his work in us to conform us to the image of Christ, and his promise to get us all the way to praise, glory, and honor through genuine faith in Christ. Today we see God’s mercy in the context of our trials. We gain a new perspective on our trials in light of God’s grace. May the Lord encourage our faithfulness to him through his word.

In a letter designed to encourage believers toward faithfulness to Christ as they experience the tension of living in this world, Peter begins with praise to God. As he praises God for his great mercy toward us, he is reminding us of the basis of our hope. His aim is to produce joy. Joy in God is a power that sustains us when our faith is tested. As Christians and as a congregation, let us hear and heed the call to be constant in prayer. As we pray, let us trust in the love, wisdom, and power of God; entrust ourselves, our circumstances, and others to him; ask him in Christ’s name, according to his will, and for his glory; and receive his response with faith, submission, and thanksgiving. Let us pray.
