Marriage matters, and God calls husbands and wives to live honorably in their marriages. If we believe this, we will look and listen to what God has revealed in the Bible about marriage, receive what he said a marriage is, and conform our lives as husbands and wives to his will. In a culture of marital chaos and pain, Peter’s instructions come to us as order and sanity, healing and wholeness, and goodness and love.

The workplace provides a place to do good work, earn a living, and reflect the grace of God. When the workplace becomes a hardship for Christians, we have a particular way to live honorably by following the example of Christ. Our driving motivation is always to be like Christ and bring glory to God in everything we do.

Being a Christian directs us in all of life because we now live for the Lord’s sake; seeking to do his will and to bring glory to him. This includes our life as citizens. Submission to God and to the law is required of Christians. Proper fear of God helps us fulfill our obligations to everyone, including the government. By doing so we will remove the opportunity to be slandered as evildoers.

On this Palm Sunday, we consider the entrusted life of Jesus. Jesus handed over to the Father his physical life and death, and the circumstances and events of his ministry. He submitted his will to the purpose the Father had for him on earth. He yielded up his soul to the Father’s care as he suffered. He gave all to God. He did this for us. By his obedience we are made right with God. He did this as an example for us to follow. Let us entrust our souls to the faithful Creator and Redeemer.

To be faithful to Christ in private and in public, sojourners must keep watch over their souls and remember they are being watched by others. This passage calls us to abstain from the desires of the sinful nature so we can see God. We are to keep our conduct honorable in the world so others can see the goodness of God’s ways and glorify him with us. These exhortations provide the beginning guidance for our sojourning life. May we hear, heed, and help one another.
