The opening words of the Lord in Isaiah are to his children. The Lord exposes their sin and displays his grace. His children have turned from him, he calls them back. If they return, he promises cleansing, restoration, and renewal. The book of Isaiah is a vision of God, his grace, and the way of faith and faithfulness to him.

Peter warns his readers about the presence of false teachers in the Church. Peter describes their error, tactics, and effect on the Church. Peter also writes about the future judgment of those who would bring false teaching into the Church. There are two lessons for us. We should not be forgetful or naïve. And we also should not despair, for God is in control.

All of Scripture has been given through divine inspiration by the Holy Spirit. God has given us this gift as a light in our dark world, showing us which way to go. Christians are called to pay close attention to Scripture, building our lives on its truth as we wait for Jesus to return.

The rich grace of God by which he saved us also supplies everything we need to grow in godliness. Today, we consider what God has granted us by grace, and how we build on our faith. The earnestness with which Peter reminds the church of the qualities of godliness moves us to pursue them in our lives.

At the end of the Apostle Peter’s first letter to the churches we hear the great promise that gives us hope in our present suffering. As sojourners in this world, our suffering comes in many forms. In this passage, the suffering is in the form of ongoing attacks and accusations of the devil that we must regularly resist by faith. The hope we have lies in the promise that our suffering here will give way to the work of God in our lives that will lead to the final state of shared glory with Christ our Savior. Let this promise pull you forward in faith and faithfulness to him.
