The Gospel writers give us the details of the burial of Jesus. The Apostle Paul listed Jesus’ burial as one of the essential events of the gospel. Today we give our attention to this often overlooked event to again expand our vision of Jesus. The burial of Jesus shows us the reality and power of his death that changes our hearts, and of his resurrection that makes all things new.

One of the ways that we pursue this mission is by gathering each Sunday for corporate worship, prayer, and biblical teaching. The vision we see of Jesus in this passage is him standing alone. He is denied by his disciple, rejected by his people, declared “not guilty” but sentenced to death. A closer look shows him alone because he only bore the punishment of our sins, brings us to God, and remains faithful to the end. Seeing Jesus with the eyes of the heart generates faith, hope, and love.

The prayer of Jesus reveals the will of God for his church. We are to be sanctified in the truth. The work of God to sanctify us sets us apart from the world as we are conformed to the image of Christ, and sets us apart for his mission as we live in the world. God has taken us out of the world and given us to Christ. Christ has sent us back into the world for God. Today we pray for and pursue sanctification in truth.
