The promise of the presence of Christ did not end when he ascended to heaven. He said he will be with us to the end of the age. Christ has given us his Spirit to be with us, to live in us, and to give us the power to testify of his grace. He has sent his church into the world for this purpose and with this promise.

God is with us by His Spirit, but His presence is not passive. Through His Spirit, God is continually making us more like Jesus. Like fire, the Holy Spirit purifies, comforts, and illuminates His people.

God does not leave us in our sin, but comes to rescue us. We understand the richness of Immanuel when we clearly see how the Bible defines sin. Our response to Immanuel coming to rescue us is faith and worship.

The sign of a son, conceived and born of a virgin, is realized in Jesus Christ.  Jesus is Immanuel, God with us.  Today we hear the account of Jesus’ birth, consider the reality that he is God with us, and rejoice in all that his presence means for us as his people. May the old story bring new life to our weary souls.

John does not leave us wondering what became of his dear friend Peter who denied Jesus three times. In this final chapter of John, Jesus walks Peter through the process of contrition, confession, and restoration. Here we have a final vision of the greatness and graciousness of Jesus. We hear his final word to his disciple, “Follow Me.” Here we are at the end of the Gospel of John. Do you see Jesus? Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God? Will you follow him?
