The peace that Christ accomplished for us through his death on the cross is ours through union with him. Now we live with his peace ruling in our hearts to settle us before God and guide the way we relate to one another in the church. We become a new self in Christ by the grace of God through the work of the Holy Spirit. We become like Christ as the Spirit of God gives us the power to put on the characteristics of the new self. Union with Christ means we have been raised with him from death to life. We are new people, spiritually alive to God while in our mortal bodies. This is the reality for all who are “in Christ.” Now, as new selves, we put on the practices of the new self, which are in the likeness of Christ. The reality of the new self in union with Christ makes it possible for us to walk in newness of life.

Putting sin to death is possible because we have died with Christ to sin and have been raised with him in power. Christ now lives in us by his Spirit. Putting sin to death is the practice of our union with Christ. Praise God for his grace in Christ by which we are free from the damning dominion of sin.
