To be faithful to Christ in private and in public, sojourners must keep watch over their souls and remember they are being watched by others. This passage calls us to abstain from the desires of the sinful nature so we can see God. We are to keep our conduct honorable in the world so others can see the goodness of God’s ways and glorify him with us. These exhortations provide the beginning guidance for our sojourning life. May we hear, heed, and help one another.

Sunday Mar 19, 2023
This passage contains one of the greatest identity and purpose statements for the church in all the Bible. The church is God’s chosen people, ransomed by Christ to belong to him. The church serves God as priests who offer up the sacrifices of worship, prayer, and consecrated lives to him. The church proclaims God’s excellencies in the world as witnesses to his greatness and grace. May this vision of the church be ours at Grace Community Church.

The high calling of the sojourning Christian is to grow up into salvation. The way of spiritual growth is by the word of God. Like babies longing for and drinking milk, so we desire and feed upon God’s word. As we do, we grow up into the image of Christ knowing that in the end we will be like him. Spiritual growth is the priority of our lives.

The command to love one another is one of the most basic commands in the Bible. But the reason and resources to love are not often understood. We love one another because we have been born again. We love one another from the power of a new and purified life. Love is a characteristic of a holy life. Love is produced by the living and abiding word of God. Today, we rejoice in the gift of new life and remember to love one another.

Holiness is a beautiful word. Applied to God, it refers to the perfection of all his attributes combined into a single description of his nature. God is holy. Since all of God’s attributes are perfectly good, his holiness is beautiful. How does holiness apply to us? By God’s mercy we have been born again to a living hope. Our hope is that God will make us holy. God is progressively purifying our faith and transforming our character to be like his Son Jesus Christ. In this sense, we are becoming holy. We, spiritually alive sojourners on this earth who have set our hope on the grace to God in Christ, are to be holy. Today we consider the call to be holy, why we are to pursue holiness, and how we become more and more holy until we meet the Lord.
